Background:

Enrollment for courses has declined in recent semesters (since the implementation of GE-2012), partially due to the continuing requirement in Element 3A/B that two HUM courses must be used to satisfy this requirement. Advisors have found it difficult to get students into this separate stream owing to limited scheduling availability, and students are evidently reluctant to commit to a 6 hour block, especially within the newly streamlined GE curriculum. This move is in keeping with the spirit of recent GE reforms, giving students more flexibility and more opportunity to explore a HUM course without necessarily committing to or being locked into two courses. This will also help transfer students who have one HUM course; they will be able to choose a non-HUM course to satisfy Element 3. On the model of what was done with Foreign Language courses, we suggest that students taking HUM in Element 3 be “recommended” (but no longer required) to take a second HUM course within this element. As integrated arts and humanities courses, HUM GE courses are appropriate to both 3A (arts) and 3B (humanities).

The course catalog text change (Part II, below) adds descriptive language to provide students with fuller understanding of the nature and focus of the course.

Issues:

To move the course from General Education Element 3A/B to Elements 3A and 3B.
